Our Story

Zafira started as just a few skirts on Etsy that I was making and shipping out of my Montreal apartment while going to school. After relocating back home to Halifax, Zafira became an online store using pop-up shops as a medium to sell direct to customers. After a few years of many trials and errors, ups and downs, and plenty of actual blood sweat and tears, Zafira is now based out of Toronto.

A start-up company is the scariest, and at the same time the most exciting thing I’ve ever done. For something that is growing and changing every day, why should it have a one paragraph story? Here is the ever evolving journey.

#ArtOutright Day 1 - 6

February 03, 2016 · 0 Comments

It's been 6 days since the opening at the Art Outright event at the Nuvango Gallery at 639 Queen St. West, and like always time has flown by! Day #1 I spent doing sketches. I already had it in my head what I was imagining for this collection, but now it was time to translate onto paper. This consumed most of my first day, along with completing the set up of my space. I am all about the Feng Shui, so my mini gallery wall I set up with my cork board to pin ideas to brought a little bit...

New Year, Old Me.

January 18, 2016 · 0 Comments

2015 was an interesting year full of changes, growth, and honestly some pretty low moments. I am proud to say that I persevered and pushed through diverse times and character building situations... It took me a few weeks to recap the year that has passed and capture it into a post. A new year is supposed to be full of resolutions; vows of celibacy towards your deepest darkest vices like ketchup and cosmic bingo. Yes, I believe goals are something to always aim for and work at and there is always personal development to be done. But, I'm a libra and...

Feelin' Moody

December 10, 2015 · 0 Comments

Feeling a little moody this morning so I made a mood board to collect my colour thoughts for Fall/Winter '16-17. The Pantone colours of the year are Rose Quartz & Serenity; two colours for the first time. It's always interesting to see what is trending, and I've been thinking about winter pastels for a while so I was excited to see this! The board is a compilation of colours, mostly, not design details and inspiration. There's only the beginning of a colour story happening right now. I am just starting to get the vibe for what I want to say with this collection! (Click the...

Thrifted Ideas

December 02, 2015 · 0 Comments

Hot off the topic of sustainability in fashion, I stumbled on these old photos as I was backing up my laptop to my hard drive. I am currently researching a lot of ways to source more ethical fabric etc, so to see that I was actually in more of that direction when I first started out, is pretty interesting to look back on!  For anyone who hasn't heard this story from me before, I started Second Chance Couture after many trips to the thrift store finding these beautiful vintage tunics that had gorgeous prints but were styles or sizes I would or could...

Fashion Follies

November 17, 2015 · 0 Comments

It's difficult to imagine the life and journey of a garment we each have in our own closet. We don't want to know where the garment came from, how it was made or where it will end up after we are done with it. We just want to know how many we can get and what is the cheapest price, righttt???  Check out these "Haul's" YouTuber's are doing. People LOVE them. "Fast Fashion" is happening at a social and environmental cost. We may not see the truth hanging in our closet next to our $10 pair of pants, but someone is suffering those consequences.  ...

The Creative Journey -13 Steps to Building a Collection

October 28, 2015 · 4 Comments

I am often asked how I build a collection. I usually go on a ramble because it isn't just a quick trip. Building a collection usually means sitting in a quiet place, shutting myself off from the world, only taking the time to eat take-out, and then calling it quits right before I reach insanity! Before this point, I've accumulated a ton of little folders on my desktop of research and inspiration and have a small pile of random sketches I've collected, and now it's time to sit down and actually figure out what I'm trying to say. I will sit down...

Starting Over

October 16, 2015 · 0 Comments

Starting over is always scary. I had moved back to Halifax to start my business and it was an amazing place starting out. Although after 18 months, I found that I was bumping into A LOT of barriers and road blocks. I was growing increasingly frustrated and knew that I needed a change if I wanted to see my business survive. Moving to Toronto was risky, mostly because it meant starting over in a lot of ways with my business. I wouldn't have the base of customers, connections and resources that I had in Halifax and I would need to...
