Starting over is always scary. I had moved back to Halifax to start my business and it was an amazing place starting out. Although after 18 months, I found that I was bumping into A LOT of barriers and road blocks. I was growing increasingly frustrated and knew that I needed a change if I wanted to see my business survive. Moving to Toronto was risky, mostly because it meant starting over in a lot of ways with my business. I wouldn't have the base of customers, connections and resources that I had in Halifax and I would need to re-build all of that.
I was connected to a woman named Barb who I was told would be able to help me with Canadian manufacturing. Through further investigation, I discovered that Barb mentors emerging designers. I followed my gut and asked her if she would let me shadow her if I moved to Toronto. She agreed and I took the plunge, not having any certainty of how this would pan out. I can now honestly say that I have gained so much knowledge because of her in the past 6 months. Without her, I am not sure how I would have been able to find and fulfill wholesale orders that I have received since moving here. Finding Barb has helped me make key changes within my business. BARB, I LOVE YOU.
I have many people who I look up to that I consider mentors who have all been guides for me along my journey. I recommend to anyone eager to develop further professionally to find someone who knows everything that you NEED to know, and learn from them. Follow them around, ask a million questions, sweep their floors ... do whatever you need to do! LEARN, LEARN, LEARN!
